Butter Side Up is considered to be Wire’s flagship night for house, techno and disco. The boys have come a long way since the early days of parties in Hyde Park. Now they not only throw huge monthly parties in the Wire basement, but also regularly feature at summer events across Leeds and at festivals in Croatia such as the paradise island of Obonjan. They have a strong relationship with The Pickle Factory and the Waiting Room in London, too, hosting sophisticated events with a dash of that unbeatable Leeds party atmosphere.

You can always count on Butter Side Up to bring in the biggest names. Here, we take a look back at ten of the best in pictures.

For the third birthday in October 2013, the guys pulled possibly their most legendary booking to date: Detroit’s Theo Parrish. He played for over seven hours that night.

Months before Fabric encountered trouble in March 2o16, BSU booked in the London club’s long-time resident Craig Richards for a four hour set. He was accompanied by an old friend in the booth…

In February 2015, they got in a younger Detroit resident in the form of Kyle Hall – a future legend who impressed with a deep disco-inspired set.

This huggable character is Panorama Bar resident Prosumer. He came down the Wire stairs in May 2015, just after the last general election. His sublime blend of disco and garage house was uplifting in a time of Tory dread.

For their 5th birthday, BSU employed the man of the moment, Hunee, for a fifth time to play a blissful all-night-long set of every genre you can imagine. Rarely have the party vibes been so intense on this milestone.

The booking of Margaret Dygas in November 2015 marked a departure in Butter Side Up’s sound. Whereas before they focussed on the disco-influenced side of house music, they started to explore the deeper elements of the genre. Perlon’s Dygas played an abstract set of minimal techno and house, ending with a lights-up spin of Nina Simone’s My Baby Just Cares For Me.

In February 2016, BSU provided one of their biggest ever line ups. It was an Ostgut Ton masterclass featuring Nick Hoppner who opened things up…

…and Tama Sumo who finished the night off. Some of the finest mixing and selection that the club has ever seen, no doubt.

Evan Baggs is part of the new school of minimal DJs who specialise in digging for meanest, leanest obscure records of deep and tech house. Also releasing on DJ Masda’s Cabaret Records, he epitomises the wonky minimal sound that Butter Side Up aspires to. This was in April 2016.

The final choice from the BSU roster is a man who was one of the originators of the minimal genre: Detroit’s Daniel Bell. He came to Wire in May 2016, playing alongside Annie Errez, and completely destroyed the dance floor with his thumping deep and minimal house.

Next up is another revered minimal house DJ, Sonja Moonear. Her enthusiasm behind the decks will make for a wonderful birthday party atmosphere.
