This Friday, Overflow will be throwing their 25th proper party. There is no doubt that they are the bastions of Drum & Bass in Leeds, and we are really proud to host their events at Wire.

Their next event features LSB, who is one of the scene’s front running Liquid DJs and producers. He’s been in the game for 10 years now, so must have picked up some sweet records along the way. We asked to have a quick look at his bag before he comes to Wire on Friday.

First record ever bought?

This is the first record I can remember buying, from Woolworths on Christmas eve, I think it was Christmas Number one that year (1987) which means I was 5 at the time. I had my mums 12” version of West End Girls, but I don’t think I bought that. It’s not a strong record in hindsight, which I could mention something cooler. Even something like ‘Being Boring’ by the same band was a much stronger (if less successful record).

 

Best floorfiller?

Back in my early days of DJing I was really pushing the liquid sounds when a lot of jump up was being played, we’re talking about 2003 when I co-run a night Norwich called Bounce. Together by Logistics was always working well, but that’s too obvious. However a tune called Strangeways by Sonic would always destroy the place and it hardly got any recognition. I might have to dig that out. Kinda of a moody melodic neurofunk tune with a big build up without being cheesy, always worked.

Dropping Manipulate The Universe by D Kay and DJ Lee is working a treat at the moment, it’s got a timeless feel, a housey organ sound combined with beautiful pads and vocals. D Kay and Lee were/are underrated and versatile producers.

 

Most nostalgic record?

Probably Jahiem – Put That Woman First (Caliber Remix) an absolute classic and played as the last tune at my wedding last year. A beautiful tune full of wonderful memories.

 

Most valuable record? (monetary or sentimental)

This is going to sound a bit arrogant, but copies of a tune I did with Technicolour and Komatic called Rotary Motion is going for £100 on discogs.   I have a copy somewhere, so it probably is my most valuable record.

 

Weirdest record?

Tough one!  Somewhere along the line I picked up a record which is essentially a spoken word piece about have to give appropriate oral sex. I just used to buy lots of records with the intent of sampling then, sometimes you’d just pick up these records blind because they were cheap. It was a risk, some were winners, many were losers. I’m still not quite sure which category this falls into.

 

Last record you bought?

If we’re talking vinyl it was a few years back, maybe I’m a Creator by Dub Phizix. I’m actually a Spotify Premium account holder recently so listen to a lot of music that way. I still do some regular shopping on Juno for some latest DnB for my sets. I do fancy a bit of vinyl binge at some point this summer, just to enjoy the smell of it again!
