Butter Side Up
Over the last five years, Butter Side Up has positioned itself at the forefront of the Leeds scene. Working out of Wire, with its intimate capacity, low ceiling and Funktion One sound, the monthly party offers up city debuts, brave bookings and cultured headliners that others dare not.
Each one serves to carve out BSU’s own little niche yet further, and in recent times debuts have been handed to the likes of Rick Wade, Patrice Scott, Hunee, Amir Alexander and Soulphiction, whilst influential DJs like Theo Parrish, Mike Huckaby, Floating Points and Gerd Jansen have all been happy to take gigs thanks to the night’s excellent reputation throughout the world.
House, disco and techno is all fair game (as is also evidenced by the night’s excellent podcast series, featuring the likes of Roman Flugel, Axel Boman Iron Curtis, Hunee and Anton Zap) with guests often passing by Butter Side Up on their way up, then again once the rest of the world has cottoned on and they have rightfully become more established.
The friendly but enthusiastic atmosphere at each party has been slowly nurtured over the last few years, with regulars coming back each month not only for the choice guests, but for the always assured resident sets from Hamish Cole, Hugh Bailey, Jonny Sleight and Ciaran Hansen. This reputation has spread far and wide and as such BSU have hosted at festivals including Gottwood and Secret Garden Party as well as in Croatia for Dimensions and Unknown.
Now with offers to expand pouring in, Butter Side Up plans to make some first forays into the London scene in 2015, but will always remain focussed on its own early goals – a close-knit party with quality music in a welcoming, well appointed setting. So far, it has served them more than well, as both dancers and DJs will undoubtedly attest.
None of these club nights are scheduled at the moment.
