We used to see a whole lot of Reflec a couple of years ago when he was a resident at Selective Hearing. Having moved on, he is now one of the most in-demand techno selectors in the country. He released on Lobster Theremin in 2015, and more recently a proper rugged techno jam on Clergy. He now regularly sits alongside artists such as Dax J and Mark Broom as one of the genre’s heavyweights. But what led him to such a sound? We asked him a few quick questions.

Your earliest musical memory?

Probably my Dad playing the guitar.

The first record you bought?

I can’t remember exactly but I’m pretty sure it was like Skream – Midnight Request Line or like Benga & Coki – Night.

A record that made you pick up an instrument?

Iron Maiden – The Trooper. This kid in my class was an amazing metal guitarist and he needed someone to play the rhythm so he taught me the chords.

A tune from your teens?

Gangstarr – Work

A record that changed your music taste?

Boddika – Syn Chron. I was kind of only listening to Garage & Dubstep at the time and Boddika started putting out this slower 130bpm leaning towards techno/electro sounding stuff and it had a massive impact into opening my eyes to 4×4 and techno etc…

A lyric that sums up your philosophy?

‘Lord forgive me, the Hennesey got me not knowin’ how to act’ – Mobb Deep – Survival of the Fittest – Im not religious or anything but I am prone to a tad too much Brandy.

An unlikely influence?

The Congo’s

A current influence?

I saw Helena Hauff tear the roof off Phonox in Brixton a couple of Sundays ago and it had a profound effect on me. She’s insane, a proper lesson in keeping the energy ‘up there’…

A record you want played at your funeral?

Windows 95 Start-Up Sound (Slowed 4000%)

Walking Through Sound w/ Reflec is on Monday 25th September.
