We’re very happy to be welcoming another new event to Wire. Get to know:
NAME: Tempus
ORGANISERS/RESIDENT DJs: Stephen Crawshaw, Fee Leslie, Nathan Sharpe, Sam Palm Jonny Foulkes, Eby Daji. Residents: Matt Long (Monocult) and Tom Drew (Loophole)
GENRES: All things House and Techno, with a focus on the deeper, more melodic side of the spectrum. Think Panorama Bar meets (Detroit’s) Club Bleu. That’s the vibe we’re going for anyway!
YOUR DAY JOBS: Fee and Steve – Students,
DREAM BOOKING: Steve: Hmmm, that’s a tricky one! There are so many people we’d love to bring to Wire! One of the main reason for us starting this night was so that we had the chance to see some artists that we’re really digging at the moment that aren’t necessarily being booked a whole lot in the city or even the UK as a whole. I think personally, Laurent Garnier would be pretty much the pinnacle for me right now. He was one of the pioneers of electronic music back in the 80s, and he’s still absolutely killing it now, 25 years later, he’s clearly very passionate about the music and to top it off he’s really humble about what he’s achieved.
MOST INFLUENTIAL CLUBBING EXPERIENCE: Steve: I’d say that NYD 2012 at The Hydra event put on by Electric Minds was the first experience I had of a night where I was actually blown away by the quality of the music. I remember losing all my mates for ages, then finding them in the middle of the dancefloor in the basement at 6am seeing Henrik Schwarz close the night with a live set, and the feeling that there was nowhere else in the world it would be better to be at that moment. The sense of it being an almost religious experience. I think that’s the feeling I’m always chasing when I go to nights now.
LAST CLUB NIGHT ATTENDED: Steve: Well the weekend just gone was a big one for us. Tempus isn’t actually our first project in Leeds. For the last 3 years or so it’s always been our goal to start a night like Tempus, as that’s always been the sort of music that we feel most connected to. But before Tempus and hopefully long into the future we also put on parties under the AFTRS moniker, and we had our biggest one to date on Saturday (well Sunday really) with People Get Real, Jackmaster and Heidi all coming back after the Canal Mills Presents night to play some records with us in the Wire basement until 9am, and as I hope anyone who went will tell you, it was a vibe!
LAST RECORD YOU BOUGHT: Steve: I’m actually saving up for a set of decks at the moment so I’ve not bought a whole lot of music recently. I think the last electronic record I bought was powers of 10 by Stephan Bodzin, such a versatile record that you can listen to again and again and take something new from it each time. It’s still one of my favorites today.
THREE TRACKS THAT SUM UP YOUR EVENT:
Such a nice groove to this track. Its got everything you’d want from a record, and even though I’ve not been to Panorama Bar (yet) the fact that this is a favorite over there says a lot about the club, and we’d love to be able to transport the P-bar vibe to Leeds for the 22nd.
This is a super sleazy house anthem that still sounds so fresh today. Hopefully there’ll be some people this excited down in the basement on Tuesday.
It wouldn’t be a top 3 without the man himself in there. What can I say about this, just a beautiful track isn’t it!?
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST EVENT: We wanted to make a statement with our first booking, and make sure people knew what we are about. We’ve seen Marcus a couple of times in London now and when he plays it’s almost like he’s playing specifically to you and no-one else. We’re really excited to be able to bring him to Leeds for the first time since 2012. As well as Marcus we are lucky enough to have a couple of residents who really know how to bring the party. Matt Long is owner and resident DJ of the Leeds powerhouse Mono_cult, making a name for himself over 10 years in the city playing a unique blend of deep groovers and funky shakers that never fail to impress. Alongside him is up and comer Tom Drew, fresh from residencies with Nørd, and his very own Loophole, he’ll be bringing us an eclectic set choc a bloc with sounds from New York to Berlin.
